Burlington Modern Renovation

Custom dining room addition to an existing 70's Deckhouse. The playful design was influenced by the Asian inspired unisonian style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The result was a creative "jewel box" that is reminiscent of a tree house structure within this deeply wooded lot.

Canton Loft

This project provided the opportunity to work primarily within the context of a confined and set interior environment. In focusing on the view to the pond the design developed an open experience within a narrow space on multiple levels. Staggering views to a local Canton pond provided the inspiration for this loft style design.

Boutique Basement Studio

Our client sought to renovate their 1,200 square foot unfinished basement for the purpose of a Palates studio, entertainment space and home office. The conceptual design offered features such as a home office, a Palates studio, sauna and hot tub. All perfect amenities for the entire family to relax and kick up their shoes or move their feet. The majority of the space was split down the middle between lounge and studio. The studio features mirrored walls with over 400 square feet of home health equipment. To the far end of the work out area is the relaxation corner with a 4 person Jacuzzi and 2 person sauna with suggested featured accent wall. On the opposing side of the studio is the lounge area complete with fire place, wine cellar and a full bath. The open concept works well within a long, narrow space when combining several activities that are broken up into different nodes. The balance of the design includes a 210 square foot home office and access to the private back yard.

Byrnes Residence

Our client wanted to expand the living space in this garrison colonial by creating a new family room and master bath extension at the second floor. The ceiling height in this originally traditional cape was too modest so we suggested a step down into the family room creating a grander entry. The master bath extended overhead creating the need for dormers. The scaled dormers provide light and space not only to the bathroom but extend into the family room exposed ceiling beyond. As a result of the smaller scale, the addition does not overpower the house. The transom windows provide added detail to the space and alignment to the existing windows.


Dutch Colonial Style

A variety of custom design exteriors, both new homes & additions. We pride our additions to incorporate as much of the existing character of the home as possible in order to achieve a balanced design that doesn't seem like its tacked on.

Jefferson Residence

Project Overview:
Type: Craftsman Home Renovation; Scope of Work: 800 square foot renovation; Style: Craftsman; Location: Tewksbury, Massachusetts; Year Completed: 2001

Project Description:
Prior to construction, this kitchen was nothing more than an empty barn-like structure with a dirt floor. Distinct trim around each window and door opening, custom built-in casework at the sitting area, and the rough stone masonry surrounding the chimney, all ring true with the handmade character of this craftsman design renovation. The selection of modern light fixtures and appliances create a playful contrast within the overall craftsman design style.
Cathedral ceilings introduce a sense of overwhelming scale to the space. As your eyes are drawn upwards, skylights and light fixtures direct light downward, thus redirecting one’s sense of space back to the human scale. The abundance of windows within the kitchen allow a strong connection to the exterior, while flooding the room with natural daylight. This project is an example of what is possible with a little innovation and a touch of character.
The client thought so much of the design that they honored our work by permanently incorporating the diamond from the JFF design logo into their home. Thus began a new tradition at JFF Design, of incorporating the diamond into all future projects. May it be visible, implied, or hidden for discovery, it has become a playful twist to be sure.


Heimiller / Kubany Residence

Project Overview:
Type: Modern Home Addition Renovation; Scope of Work: 600 square foot kitchen renovation and 400 square foot deck addition; Style: Prairie; Location: Weston, Massachusetts; Year Completed: 1997

Project Description:
When the home was first constructed, a decision was made to limit the view from the kitchen into the atrium. Most likely this was done to reinforce the utility function of the kitchen. For the renovation, this decision was reversed. Instead of being disconnected from the rest of the home, the new kitchen interacts with its natural surroundings on either side. These connections are the root of the project’s design concept. Today, spaces that were once considered only for their function have become an integral part of the modern family lifestyle.
This logic is what JFF communicates through the home’s redesign. The modernization of the kitchen not only introduces a distinct charm, it also amplifies the existing energy of the home. For example, the previous kitchen did not allow views into the atrium that has Japanese garden influences. In the new kitchen, several full height windows along the wall between the two spaces resolves this. On the other side of the kitchen, the need for a second parking spot takes the form of a carport addition. This allows a very generous outdoor space for entertaining that connects back to the kitchen. The new deck’s gull-winged design was generated from an extension of the existing major and minor axis’.
