BTone Fitness Studio

Located in one of the storefronts @ the MERC on Moody Street in Waltham, MA is BTone Fitness Studio. The 1,700 sq. ft. fitness studio offers a challenging, adjustable, and an endlessly engaging work out experience; based around state of the art, custom engineered fitness equipment. The studio layout is comprised of two comfortable seating areas, reception and merchandise counter, playroom for the kiddos, restroom facilities for before and after classes, and finally what BTone is all about, two workout zones. The larger of the two zones is equipped with full height mirrors, resistant band stations, and 10 TONEy Stations, where you’re sure to feel the burn. The smaller of the two workout spaces is used for body concentrated exercises void of TONEy like yoga and stretching.

Physician One_ Urgent Care Walk-In II

Project Description: 
This Urgent Care facility design presented a number of challenges mostly due to fitting the treatment spaces in a space where no two walls were parallel nor square to each other. The other challenge was the extremely high ceiling space available. JFF Design took full advantage to create a dynamic multi- tiered lobby space to celebrate the vast sunlight coming through the storefront windows and provide the massing for a warmer feel to the space.

Project Description:
This Urgent Care facility design took full advantage of the existing space available. JFF Design reused the existing two story entry space for a lush lobby/ waiting area for the facility. The clinic wanted to introduce themselves into the local market with a statement of high impact design. They wanted to have their brand speak volumes toward the level of care they provide by stepping up the design quality and material quality. 

RTN Federal Credit Union

Project Overview:

Project Description:
RTN Federal Credit Union looked to JFF Design for rebranding and updating the 1990's look in their 9,000 sq. ft. main branch location in Waltham. JFF Design seized the opportunity to improve the customer service presence by relocating the numerous teller stations while making the necessary upgrades for full public accessibility and business efficiency. In addition, several bank officer's offices were created as well as updates to public restrooms and other back of house upgrades. New customer conveniences were included with the addition of new ATMs, a waiting area, conference room, and new cubicles to conduct client business in an open and welcoming format. The RTN mantra is commitment to customer, this renovation provided the necessary improvements to make the customer feel welcomed and part of the organization, from the greeter's station to the teller station, to the customer service personnel.  

Mitchell Elementary School

The Mitchell Elementary School in Needham, MA educates approximately 500 students in grades K through 5th grade. The school was built in 1949-1950 after the donation of land by Dr. William Mitchell, a local doctor that wanted to give back to his community. The elementary school was composed of an office, kindergarten, library, clinic, teacher’s lounge, six classrooms and a multipurpose room that served as a gym, auditorium, and cafeteria at its inception. Since its doors opened the school has had two additions. The first in 1950, with the addition of a new gym, kindergarten and additional eight classrooms. Then in 1969 a second addition added another six classroom and media center. 

Today Mitchell Elementary School has asked JFF Design develop a design to renovate the existing administration office, teacher’s lounge, and front entrance to better suit today’s educational and staffing needs. The new program consisted of a administrative office with an open floor plan. Designing a flexible teacher’s lounge that could be divided into conference space and work space using retractable walls. Then finally the redesign of the front entry that meets ADA compliance and student safety concerns. When dropped off in the morning students are greeted by a playful hardscape of stairs and serpentine ramp that funnel students into school. The front entry is highlighted in design by the use a glass box light tower that fluids the entrance with bright light to greet the day.

Colonial Nissan

Project Overview:

Project Description:
For Colonial Nissan, JFF Design was in charge of upgrades to both the facade and interior layout of their corporate location in Medford, MA. Featured in this renovation were newly designed offices and showroom spaces. All customer contact areas were renovated as well.


C F Reality Trust

Project Overview:
Type: Historical Downtown Renovation; Scope of Work: Two-story, 15,000 square foot historical commercial renovation; Style: Art Deco; Location: Waltham, Massachusetts; Year Completed: 2002

Project Description:
With this project, JFF Design had the opportunity to modernize a 1920’s Art Deco building in downtown Waltham. The Art Deco period provides flexibility when choosing materials such as the addition of the glass blocks to add expression to the pilasters. This includes the addition of fiber-optic cables behind each pilaster to serve as a back light. The modern upgrade of light allows the building to be present at night in an energy efficient manner. Fiber-optic lighting can be changed according to the seasons through the introduction of color filters at the optic’s source.
Here, the challenge was to design within the modernized character of the area, the heavy Art Deco style of the building, and blend it all with the style of the abutting historical theater. The result was an opposing contrast along the street that adds a unique flavor to each building, providing a visual differentiation between their already separate functions.

Boutique Basement Studio

Our client sought to renovate their 1,200 square foot unfinished basement for the purpose of a Palates studio, entertainment space and home office. The conceptual design offered features such as a home office, a Palates studio, sauna and hot tub. All perfect amenities for the entire family to relax and kick up their shoes or move their feet. The majority of the space was split down the middle between lounge and studio. The studio features mirrored walls with over 400 square feet of home health equipment. To the far end of the work out area is the relaxation corner with a 4 person Jacuzzi and 2 person sauna with suggested featured accent wall. On the opposing side of the studio is the lounge area complete with fire place, wine cellar and a full bath. The open concept works well within a long, narrow space when combining several activities that are broken up into different nodes. The balance of the design includes a 210 square foot home office and access to the private back yard.

Waltham Fine Arts Addition

Project Overview:
Type: Institutional Renovation; Scope of Work; Altar Renovation; Style: Post & Beam Contemporary; Location: Waltham, MA; Year of Completion: 2013

Project Description:
The Pastor wanted to open the choir area to better engage the mass celebration. The choir found the space challenging to feel part of the mass while the music is an integral part. The Pastor envisioned a centrally focused stained glass feature over the Tabernacle and we suggested the use of LED lighting that can change with the Liturgical calendar and lit from each side for an even hue. Fr. commissioned the stain glass window and was hand made in Guatemala, Central America and installed in 2015. The concept of opening each side of the Tabernacle allows the choir and the congregation to feel better connected with each other in celebration of the mass.


Embassy Park Competition

Project Description:
Waltham’s community is as strong as it is diverse. It’s multi-cultural presence is much like the workings of the watches created in the city; all individual pieces working together for a common thread. Waltham has long been the destination of many a migrant worker and wealthy statesman alike in search of opportunity and that of relaxation and escape. So too is this site linked to and rich with history! Once a center for relaxation and entertainment now the very link that provides a path and oasis for all who travel through or within its’ bounds.
The worker and commuter can quickly pass through the portal on path to their destination not paying attention to the mix of pieces or parts arranged for their enjoyment; but that is not their focus. They must be on time and waste not a moment to doddle lest they be late. They are not conscious of the clock they pass through like a time traveler nor of the hands of time that shelter their passage. Luncheoners gather amidst the array of seating spaces to enjoy each other’s company or sit in solitude along the quiet path. They are afforded the opportunity to gaze upon the visual displays or sculpture or cultural celebrations that can be changed periodically.
The space we provide is rich with symbolism, some that is obvious…others not so. A variety of activity and energy all contained within a small space to be experienced much like the rush of energy that exists every day in the passage of time and travelers. The strong rigid path to the south is straight and direct providing a sheltered concourse for those seeking only to traverse from point a to point b. The seating is arranged in the form of hours on a clock or is it the open sides of a film strip reel? As one gathers to reflect alongside the tranquility of the shallow pool one discovers that both are true. As the seating unfolds and continues along the quiet path, it is as if time is unfolding much like the film spilling from the reel.
The strong concrete viewing screen poised at the edge of the pool provides the canvas for artisan displays or that of cultural awareness as projected from the camera’s shroud. The projection booth celebrates the progression from the box still camera to the projection reel and further through the multi lenses of the original television camera to today’s technology housed within. Artists or culturists are afforded the opportunity to display their wares either through pin drive, DVD or internet uplink. This ever-changing opportunity will present an energy and a buzz throughout this diverse community.
Much like the film reel, the space unfolds to a quieter side along the path where one can lose oneself to the sounds of the water fall in the distance while sitting beneath the tree shade provided for comfort. The luncheoners can meet with friends or enjoy the solitude throughout the park. When night falls, this space transforms into a wealth of possibilities. The camera kiosk seems to come alive and one can almost hear the clicking of the projector as it displays the latest attraction. The lighted pool comes alive with jets of water ticking off time which emanates from the hour seats marking time with each revolution.
The stage is positioned for presentation of a cultural dance, an artist’s sculptural display or perhaps an ad hoc festival or intimate dance event. Whatever the case; this space provides an opportunity for multi-faceted interaction much like the pieces of the watch or the diversity of the community it serves. The time travel experienced in this urban oasis is as direct as the commuters path or as meandering as the film strip through time. This space brings warmth, shelter, movement, symbolism, presence of mind but mainly a collection of everything that makes Waltham the strong community it is. The collection of many parts within a moving timepiece rich with culture both immigrated and interpreted…both celebrated through historical presence or showcased through an artist’s interpretation.


Waltham Boys and Girls Club

Project Description:
This conceptual redesign is intended to update and expand the existing Waltham Exchange Street site for the Waltham Boys and Girls Club. The intent was to create a playful facade so that the staff and the public will never forget who the club is meant to serve. The daily activities and programs available at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America are a vibrant, wonderful, and rewarding experience for our children. 

Science Lab - Watertown high

Project Overview:

Project Description:
When faced with a debilitating flood within the school, the Town of Watertown seized the opportunity to update the high school science labs and create a model for the science education for the town. Using our collegiate laboratory design experience, JFF Design implemented design elements utilized in institutions such as Tufts University and Harvard University to the students of Watertown High School. The science director was excited to be able to introduce these pre-college students to levels they will experience as young laboratory students in the near future. This type of learning facility is the very inspiration a student needs to inspire their career path.


OLCA - Private School Addition

Project Overview:

Project Description:
Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish is a vibrant parish with an equally vibrant private academy! As such, the parish community is very involved on both the school and parish activities. The Pastor wanted to create a community room that can be shared by both the school and the parish community. In addition, the space was extended to include the new administration wing complete with public toilet facilities, a new music room and state of the art science room. The positioning of the addition was quite important and intentional not only as a centralizing focus of the original building and 2001 addition but most importantly as a connection to the St. Joseph Chapel housed within the school. The main axis for the entry focus’ and ties directly to the chapel alter thus aggrandizing the main entry of the academy.


Orchard Square

Project Description:
This site along the route 110 corridor of Westford, MA will soon be transformed to this collection of retail stores, bank building and family style restaurant. Recently approved by the Westford Planning Board, we will continue to develop the design and will update the images as they come about.


Corbett Reality

Project Overview:

Project Description:
This project features an upgrade to the 1920’s facade with new siding and storefront layout and design. It was our intent to preserve the character of this building while updating to the new century. This building is in a very prominent location in Waverly Square in Belmont, MA.
